How to Play Ludo

You start with all four tokens in your yard. Roll a 6 to move one onto your coloured starting square, then race it clockwise around the fifty-two square track and up into your own home column. Every token has to travel the full lap, and you need an exact roll to finish, overshooting home is not allowed, so the last few squares often decide the game.

Landing on a square occupied by an opponent sends their token straight back to its yard, and earns you another roll. Eight squares are safe, the four coloured starting squares and the four marked with a star, and nothing can be captured there. Deciding when to run for home and when to hang back on a safe square is most of the skill in Ludo.

What Are the Rules of Ludo?

The rules here follow standard Ludo. There are only a handful, and the game enforces all of them for you:

• Roll a 6 to start. A token cannot leave the yard on any other number, so your first job each game is finding a six.
• Capturing sends a token home. Land exactly on an opponent and their token goes back to its yard and starts the lap again.
• Eight squares are safe. The four coloured starting squares and the four star squares, no capture can happen on any of them.
• An exact roll finishes. A token needs the precise number to reach home. If the roll is too high, that token simply cannot move.
• Sixes, captures and finishes earn another roll. But three sixes in a row forfeits the turn entirely, the third one is not played.
• First to bring all four tokens home wins. In a 4-player game the others keep playing for second and third.

Two tokens may share a square, and there is no blocking rule here, opponents can always move past a stack rather than being trapped behind it.
